This course has been cancelled due to very low water conditions at Goose Pond Sanctuary and inclement weather conditions.

Sketching with Scopes

Saturday, November 5, 8-11AM (field class)

Just five minutes of sketching a heron is a fun way of capturing an outing! Artwork by instructor Carolyn Byers

Join us for a morning of sketching waterfowl at Goose Pond! We will meet at the Wingspan Pavilion, situated in the Bicentennial Prairie overlooking Goose Pond. We'll brush up on gesture drawings and thumbnail sketches in the beginning of class. Then you'll get to practice using optics while sketching. We'll have binoculars and some spotting scopes for you to borrow, but please bring your own if you like. Your instructor will be Carolyn Byers, Madison Audubon’s education director and artist behind Green Sparrow Arts.

Rain date is Sunday, November 6th (watch out for the time change!).

This class is ideal for beginning artists, people who have not practiced using optics while drawing, or those who want to grow their skills drawing living (moving!) birds.

Registration costs $20/person and is open to all. Class is limited to 20 participants.

About the instructor

Instructor Carolyn Byers

Carolyn has spent many years studying avian behavior, and loves to share her bird knowledge with the Madison Audubon community. She is particularly interested in nesting ecology, chick development, and foraging behavior. Carolyn earned a BS in biology from the University of New Hampshire and a Master’s degree in wildlife ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Carolyn loves being a part of Madison Audubon education team which brings science to local youth and our communities. Carolyn enjoys spending time being active outside gardening, camping, fishing, and (of course) birding. Carolyn's (current) favorite birds are Henslow's Sparrows and other LBJs (little brown jobs)!

This class is part of Madison Audubon’s Naturalist Series. Registration for this class opens first to Madison Audubon members, and any remaining seats will open to the public a few weeks later. Want to join Madison Audubon? Click here!
