An Evening with Caribbean Birds

The International Crane Foundation and Charlie Luthin are hosting an Evening with Caribbean Birds.  Dr. Xiomara Galvez, a Cuban ornithologist now residing in Mexico, is an authority on Cuban Sandhill Cranes and the Caribbean (American) Flamingo.  Misael Zozaya, a native of Merida, Mexico, is an experienced bird guide and photographer.  Both will be giving presentations on the evening of Wednesday, May 15th, in the Baraboo Library auditorium.  The event is free and open to the public.

The event includes a raptor presentation by Hoo’s Woods Raptor Center, guided and independent hikes through the sanctuary, and a picnic lunch!

Preventing the deadly “thud” of bird-window collisions

Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance, SOS Save Our Songbirds, and Olbrich Botanical Gardens are teaming up to share the science behind why birds hit windows and demonstrate window treatments you can easily do at home. There will be three methods described: dot decals (as shown in the graphic), paracord curtains, and tempera paint. You’ll get to see and hear about the window treatment Olbrich installed last year, and take home a free Feather Friendly window treatment kit, donated by SOS Save Our Songbirds, while supplies last!

The Christmas Bird Count, held annually throughout North America between mid-December and early-January, works to take a snapshot of which bird species are found where during the winter season. Robins by the Thousands: Drop in event

Join Maggie and Bob Honig, Master Naturalists and volunteers with Badgerland Bird Alliance and the Friends of Capitol Springs Recreation Area, as they reveal the phenomenon of American Robins coming in to roost. In this informal, drop-in event, Maggie and Bob will orient you to the movements of the robins as we all observe them and answer any questions that you may have. You will be able to see these large numbers of robins fly by and melt into the trees and brush for the night, while meeting fellow bird enthusiasts and learning more about the natural history of American Robins.
